2023 season to feature new divisional format

Montréal, QC – In conjunction with the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL), the Montréal Alliance unveiled its 2023 season schedule on Tuesday, which includes 20 games, 10 of which will be home games played at the Verdun Auditorium.

The Alliance opens its season with back to back home games, first against the Niagara River Lions on May 26 and then two days later against the Ottawa BlackJacks on May 28.

The CEBL also announced Tuesday a conference model of competition for its fifth season. The league’s 10 teams are divided into an Eastern and Western Conference. The Western Conference includes the Calgary Surge, Edmonton Stingers, Saskatchewan Rattlers, Vancouver Bandits and Winnipeg Sea Bears. The Eastern Conference includes the Montréal Alliance, Brampton Honey Badgers, Niagara River Lions, Ottawa BlackJacks and Scarborough Shooting Stars.

The 2023 Championship Weekend takes place in Vancouver from August 11-13. Host Vancouver, along with the top-ranked team from the Eastern Conference, will automatically be seeded into the semifinals hosted at Championship Weekend.

The CEBL postseason will feature play-in games between the third and fourth-ranked teams in each conference. Winners will advance to the quarterfinals and play the second-best team of their respective conferences. The fifth-ranked team in each conference will be eliminated unless Vancouver places fifth in the West in which case the fourth-ranked West team will be eliminated. Quarterfinals winners in each conference will play their respective conference teams already seeded in the semifinals. The full postseason schedule will be revealed at a later date.

This new format emphasizes divisional play as each team faces its conference rivals three times, as opposed to two times in 2022. The Scarborough Shooting Stars and Brampton Honey Badgers will be in Montréal on two occasions while the Alliance will be the visiting team twice in Ottawa and Niagara.

The 2023 season will feature new matchups as the Alliance takes on all new franchises and relocated teams – the Calgary Surge, Winnipeg Sea Bears and Brampton Honey Badgers.

The Alliance will also play four consecutive home games against Western teams between June 25 and July 12.

The schedule of nationally televised games will be announced at a later date. All CEBL games, including the playoffs will be live-streamed on CEBL’s OTT platform, CEBL+, and on CEBL Mobile, the official app of the CEBL.
