Apr 20, 2022

Montréal, QC – The Montréal Alliance announced Wednesday that local forward Nathan Cayo has signed a contract with the expansion team for the 2022 season of the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL).

The six-foot-seven Montrealer played the last five seasons at the University of Richmond. In 155 collegiate games, Cayo averaged 8.9 points, 1.3 assists and 4.0 rebounds, while shooting 55.2 percent from the field.

During the 2020-2021 season, Cayo became the 50th Richmond player to reach 1,000 career points in a game against Saint Joseph’s University. Cayo finished his collegiate career as the 25th leading scorer in university history with 1,385 points and ranks fourth in field goal percentage with 55.2 percent. Cayo also ranks 19th in rebounding with 613.

“I am really excited to start playing in front of the fans and to be part of this first season for the Montréal Alliance,” expressed Cayo. “I want to thank God for this opportunity to start my professional career in Montréal, the city where I grew up and learned how to play basketball.”

During the 2021-2022 season, the 24-year-old helped the Richmond Spiders qualify for the March Madness tournament after averaging 9.1 points, 4.4 rebounds and 1.8 assists. In the first game, Cayo scored 15 points and helped Richmond reach the second round in a 67-63 win against the University of Iowa. In a second-round loss to Providence College, Cayo led his team with 18 points, five rebounds and one assist.

Prior to making the jump to the NCAA’s division I, Cayo played his Cégep basketball with Collège Jean-de-Brébeuf. The Montréal native averaged 19.6 points and 9.3 rebounds in his junior season before being named to the league’s all-star team and leading Brébeuf to a 3rd-place finish in the provincial championship.

Cayo grew up in the neighborhood of Sainte-Rose in Laval. He went to Des Cèdres elementary school and École d’éducation internationale in high school before joining Collège Jean-de-Brébeuf. Cayo also played with the Brookwood Elite basketball program in Pierrefonds and Pagé in Park Extension.

Cayo joins point guards Kemy Ossé and Alain Louis, shooting guard Isiah Osborne, forwards Dominic Green and James Jean-Marie as well as center Marc-André Fortin and will join the team for the beginning of training camp starting May 16.
