Montreal Alliance face Guelph Nighthawks in second matchup of season

Jun 11, 2022

The Guelph Nighthawks will seek revenge in a rematch with the Montréal Alliance on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. ET at Sleeman Centre in Guelph.

The Alliance defeated the Nighthawks last Sunday at Verdun Auditorium in Montréal in a 94-74 blowout win. Montréal jumped out to a 24-15 lead at the end of one quarter and cruised to victory over Guelph, staying undefeated at home.

Dominic Green powered the Alliance to victory with 22 points and 6 rebounds while Isiah Osborne chipped in 20 points and 5 rebounds. Ahmad Hill had a game-high 25 points for Guelph in a losing effort. The Nighthawks shot just 28 per cent from long range and turned the ball over 14 times. The Alliance capitalized on the Nighthawks’ turnovers with 23 points.

However, heading into Saturday’s match-up, Guelph is coming off a win over Ottawa and Montréal off a loss to Edmonton. After another strong start for the Alliance, the Stingers locked down defensively and won the game 85-72. Meanwhile, the Nighthawks escaped with a narrow 86-79 win over the BlackJacks. Guelph sits at 2-3 in sixth place in the CEBL standings entering the weekend matinee while Montréal is 3-3 in fifth place.

The Alliance have struggled offensively so far this season. They’re last in the CEBL in points per game at 77.7, eighth in field goal percentage and ninth in assists per game. They’re second to last in rebounds per game as well with Guelph just one spot ahead. The Nighthawks are having less trouble in the offensive end, averaging 83.6 points per game—good enough for second place in the league.

Head coach Vincent Lavandier’s Alliance squad will be looking for a bounce-back performance from their leading scorer Dominic Green. Green is averaging 15.2 points per game but finished the matchup against Edmonton with just 3 points. Osborne is also averaging double figures for Montréal with 12.2 points per game.

Meanwhile, the Nighthawks will rely on their trio of Cat Barber, Ahmad Hill and AJ Lawson to carry their offence. Barber is cutting up defences with 22.8 points per game and 5.2 assists per game. Hill and Lawson are averaging 17.6 points per game and 13.6 points per game respectively.

The game will stream on CEBL+ live internationally and in Canada at cbcsports.ca, the CBC Sports app for iOS
