Apr 18, 2023

MONTRÉAL, April 18, 2023 – The Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) announced that the 2023 CEBL U Sports Draft results will be revealed Wednesday, April 19 on CEBL.ca as well as through the league’s social media channels (@cebleague). Montréal Alliance picks will also be revealed to media members through a press release and will be made public on the team’s social media platforms, on Instagram (@alliancemontreal), Twitter (@mtl_alliance), LinkedIn and Facebook (Montréal Alliance).  All 10 teams met virtually on April 12 for the two-round draft, with the Winnipeg Sea Bears having the first pick in the draft, followed by the reverse order of the 2022 regular season standings. The Alliance selected second (round 1, pick 2) and 19th (round 2, pick 9) overall.

Last season, the Alliance also selected second and 19th overall in the 2022 CEBL U Sports Draft, selecting Alain Louis and Marc-André Fortin, respectively. Louis played in all 20 games last season and is one of two players from the 2022 roster to have re-signed for the 2023 season.

Draft-eligible U Sports players may have completed their university eligibility in 2022-23, or they may be returning to their university team this fall and be classified within the CEBL’s U Sports Developmental player program. Drafted players must qualify as Canadian and have completed at least one full year of eligibility at their U Sports institution.

The 2022 CEBL U Sports Draft Class saw elite U Sports talent play and train alongside top CEBL professionals with experience playing in premier pro leagues from around the world, including the NBA, NBA G League, and top international FIBA leagues. Notably, 2022 first overall pick David Muenkat (Scarborough Shooting Stars) went on to become the U Sports Defensive Player of the Year and a Second Team All-Canadian in 2022-23 while leading STFX to the U Sports National championship finals. Aiden Warnholtz (Ottawa BlackJacks) and 2021 CEBL U Sports Draft pick Grand Shepherd (Niagara River Lions) won the 2022-23 U Sports men’s basketball Final 8 Championship with Carleton University for a second year in a row.
