GREEK CENTRE GAIOS SKORDILIS SIGNS WITH THE ALLIANCE

Montréal, QC – The Montréal Alliance announced Thursday that European centre Gaios Skordilis has signed a contract with the expansion team for the 2022 season of the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL). 


The 34-year-old currently plays in the Greek A1 Basketball League with G.S. Iraklis B.C. in Thessaloniki. In 16 games this season, Skordilis is averaging 17.9 minutes, 7.2 points and 5.5 rebounds per game. Skordilis also played at the FIBA European Cup qualifiers earlier this season and helped his team qualify for the official competition. In three games played at the FIBA European Cup, Skordilis averaged 16.2 minutes, 10.3 points and 5.0 rebounds per game.


“It is an honour to join the Montréal Alliance for the 2022 season of the CEBL,” expressed Skordilis. “It will be my first time playing in Canada, and I look forward to meeting the fans at our first home game on May 29th.”


A six-foot-ten centre, Skordilis has played his entire professional career in his native Greece. In fact, in 14 professional seasons, Skordilis played with G.S. Iraklis B.C. (2021-2022), Peristeri B.C. (2017-2021), Faros Keratsiniou B.C. (2015-2017), AS Apollon Patras B.C. (2014-2015), Panionios B.C. (2013-2014), Panathinaikos B.C. (2012-2013), Ikaros Kallitheas B.C. (2011-2012) and Aris B.C. (2008-2011). 


Skordilis won the Greek championship and the Greek cup in 2013 while playing with Panathinaikos. The European player was also named Finals MVP of the Greek Cup in 2015-2016 and won the second division championship with Peristeri B.C. in 2018. 


The veteran played 13 of his 14 professional seasons in the first division of the Greek championship. In his only season in the second division with Peristeri B.C., Skordilis averaged 9.7 points, 7.4 rebounds and 1.3 assists.


Skordilis also played with the Greek national team, where he was first selected for the 2005 FIBA U18 European Championship. Montréal’s newest addition also played at the European Championship qualifiers in 2020. 


Skordilis joins point guards Kemy Ossé, Hernst Laroche and Alain Louis, shooting guard Isiah Osborne, forwards Dominic Green, Nathan Cayo, Abdul Mohamed, Ashley Hamilton and James Jean-Marie as well as center Marc-André Fortin and will join the team for the beginning of training camp for the 2022 CEBL season starting May 16.
