Ryan Thorne
Basketball Consultant
Ryan Thorne joins the Montréal Alliance as Basketball Consultant for the 2026 season.
Thorne has served as head coach of the McGill University men’s basketball program since 2020, leading the team to a provincial championship during the 2021–22 season with a perfect record.
Born in Barbados and raised in LaSalle, Thorne developed his game in Montréal before going on to a standout university career at Bishop’s University, where he was named team captain, Most Valuable Player, a national all-star, and a national champion. He graduated with a degree in economics in 1999 and was also named Athlete of the Year.
Prior to taking over the men’s program, Thorne spent 17 seasons as head coach of McGill’s women’s team, capturing seven provincial championships and the program’s first national title in 2017. He was named Coach of the Year multiple times at both the provincial and national levels and remains the winningest coach in program history.
At the national level, Thorne has also contributed to Canada Basketball’s high-performance program, working with both the senior development team and the junior women’s program.
He returns to the Alliance after playing a key role on the coaching staff last season, while continuing his work with the McGill program.
